Doctoral Research Training – Session 2 (October 4): Packaging Business Models, Identifying Practical Gaps, and Aligning with Theoretical Lenses to Build Conceptual Models

Today, I had the privilege of working closely with DBA candidates in our second intensive and highly engaging training session. We focused on several critical steps in building a solid research foundation:

Structuring and systematizing business models – enabling candidates to translate managerial practices into clearly defined, researchable components.

Identifying practical gaps – uncovering real-world business challenges that remain underexplored in existing literature, thereby forming a strong starting point for rigorous inquiry.

Connecting practical gaps to theoretical gaps – demonstrating how insights from practice can illuminate missing links or overlooked dimensions within current scholarly conversations, ultimately strengthening the academic contribution of the study.

Selecting an appropriate theoretical lens to integrate the conceptual model – guiding candidates in choosing and applying relevant theoretical frameworks to align research variables and construct a coherent, defensible conceptual model.

The session was marked by dynamic discussions, thoughtful questions, and meaningful peer learning. I am genuinely inspired by the candidates’ intellectual seriousness and commitment as they progressively transform real-world challenges into impactful research contributions.

I look forward to seeing their conceptual models continue to evolve and generate value for both academia and managerial practice.
