Is Semi-Structured Interview Really the Best?

There is no interview method that is universally “the best.” There is only the method that is most appropriate for your Research Questions and research objectives.

This is a common misconception that causes many doctoral researchers to choose the wrong data collection method from the beginning. After seeing that many Q1 papers use Semi-Structured Interviews, some researchers automatically assume that this is the “gold standard” for all qualitative studies.

In reality, that is not the case.

In qualitative research, there are three common types of interviews:

1. Structured Interview

Questions are fully standardized, making this approach suitable when the researcher needs to collect highly consistent data across participants.

2. Semi-Structured Interview

The researcher follows a guiding interview protocol while retaining the flexibility to explore new issues that emerge during the interview.

3. Unstructured Interview

The conversation is highly flexible and open-ended, making it particularly useful for exploratory research where the phenomenon is not yet well understood.

Among these approaches, Semi-Structured Interviews are widely used because they provide a balance between structure and flexibility. Researchers can ensure that core topics are addressed across participants while still exploring unexpected experiences, emotions, perspectives, and insights that were not anticipated in the original interview guide.

However, being widely used does not mean it is always the best choice.

If the research objective requires participants’ responses to be compared using a consistent framework, a Structured Interview may be more appropriate.

Conversely, if the study seeks to explore a relatively new or poorly understood phenomenon, an Unstructured Interviewmay generate richer and more unexpected insights.

What matters to the examination committee is not simply which interview method you selected, but whether you can clearly justify why that method is appropriate for your Research Questions, Research Design, and research objectives.

A research method only has value when it enables you to collect data that are sufficiently rich, credible, and capable of answering the Research Questions.
