A Good Thesis Does Not Start with Data Analysis

Many doctoral researchers begin their thesis journey with the question:

“Should I learn SPSS or SmartPLS first?”

That is actually the wrong question to ask at the starting point.

A high-quality thesis does not begin with Data Analysis. It begins with a Research Problem.

If you have not clearly identified the Research Gap, developed a sound theoretical model, and formulated theoretically grounded research hypotheses, then running SPSS or SmartPLS simply means processing numbers without a clear academic purpose.

In reality, the appropriate sequence of a scientific study is:

Research Problem → Literature Review → Conceptual Framework → Research Design → Data Collection → Data Analysis → Discussion → Conclusion

Data Analysis is only one stage of the research process used to examine the proposed relationships and answer the Research Questions. It does not determine the overall quality of the thesis.

I have encountered many doctoral researchers who are highly proficient in SmartPLS, including Bootstrap, HTMT, R², Q², and f², but when asked:

• Which theory supports this construct?
• Why does Hypothesis H3 exist?
• Where exactly is your Research Gap?

—they could not provide a convincing answer.

When the research foundation is weak, software cannot rescue a weak research model.

Conversely, when a study is built on a strong theoretical foundation, data analysis becomes more logical, easier to interpret, and much more academically meaningful.

Learn in the Right Order

Don’t start with the software.

Start with research thinking.

That is what distinguishes someone who knows how to run data from a true researcher.
