A Good Thesis Does Not Start with Data Analysis

Many PhD candidates begin their thesis journey with the question:
“Should I learn SPSS or SmartPLS first?”
That is actually the wrong question to ask from the very beginning.

A quality thesis does not start with Data Analysis, but with a Research Problem.
If you have not identified the research gap, built a theoretical model, and developed research hypotheses, then running SPSS or SmartPLS is simply processing numbers that have no meaningful significance.

In reality, the correct sequence of a scientific study is:
Research Problem → Literature Review → Conceptual Framework → Research Design → Data Collection → Data Analysis → Discussion → Conclusion.
Data Analysis is only one step in testing the model, not the stage that determines the quality of the thesis.

I have encountered many PhD candidates who are proficient in SmartPLS and know how to use Bootstrap, HTMT, R², Q², f²…, but when asked:

• What theory is this variable based on?
• Why does hypothesis H3 exist?
• Where is the research gap?
  …they are unable to answer.

When the research foundation is not solid, software cannot “save” a weak model.
Conversely, a study built on a rigorous theoretical foundation will make data analysis much more logical, easier to interpret, and far more academically valuable.
Learn in the right order.
Do not start with software.
Start with research thinking.
That is what truly makes the difference between someone who knows how to run data and a true researcher.
