A strong Findings chapter is not the one with the most tables or the longest quotations. Instead, it is the chapter that allows readers to see the story within the data and understand what new insights your research has discovered.
In practice, many PhD researchers spend significant time collecting and analyzing data, but when writing the Findings chapter, they simply describe the results. This makes the chapter lack depth and makes it difficult to demonstrate the study’s academic contribution.
A high-quality Findings chapter should follow these principles:
– Present findings according to the Research Questions or Research Objectives.
– Each Theme (qualitative) or each Hypothesis/Construct (quantitative) should address a specific research issue.
– Support findings with appropriate evidence (Quotes, Tables, Figures, or Statistical Results) rather than simply making assertions.
– Interpret the meaning of the results based on the data rather than personal opinions.
– Organize the Findings according to a coherent logic that allows readers to follow the research story easily.
In particular, in qualitative research, a Theme is not the same as a Finding. A Theme is a structure for organizing data, while the Finding is the academic meaning derived from that Theme. If the analysis stops at presenting Themes without explaining what the data actually reveal, the Findings chapter will struggle to demonstrate meaningful scientific value.
What the examination committee evaluates is not how many tables you have or how many pages of results you present, but what you have demonstrated from the data and how those findings contribute to existing knowledge.
A well-developed Findings chapter provides a strong foundation for the Discussion section, allowing you to connect your findings with theory and previous research while highlighting the academic value and contribution of your dissertation.
