What Is the Difference Between Mediation and Moderation?

You have run your SEM analysis and found that both Mediation and Moderation are statistically significant. But do you truly understand how these two concepts differ?

This is one of the most common misconceptions among Master’s, DBA, and PhD researchers. Many theses apply the correct statistical techniques but fail to interpret their academic meaning accurately.

Mediation answers the question: “Why?” or “Through what mechanism?”

A mediating variable explains why an independent variable (X) influences a dependent variable (Y). Instead of a direct effect, the influence of X is transmitted through a mediator (M).

Example:

Leadership → Employee Engagement → Job Performance

In this example, Employee Engagement serves as the mechanism that explains why effective leadership leads to improved job performance.

In contrast, Moderation answers the questions: “When?”, “Under what conditions?”, or “For whom?”

A moderating variable does not explain the mechanism of the relationship. Instead, it changes the strength or directionof the relationship between X and Y.

Example:

Leadership → Job Performance

If Organizational Culture is the moderator, the effect of Leadership on Job Performance may be stronger in organizations with a supportive culture and weaker in organizations with a less supportive culture.

In other words:

• Mediation explains the mechanism of an effect.
• Moderation explains the conditions under which an effect occurs.

In contemporary research, many studies combine both concepts in more sophisticated models, such as Moderated Mediation or Mediated Moderation. However, the goal is not to build the most complex model possible. Rather, every mediating or moderating variable should be supported by a strong theoretical foundation and directly contribute to answering the Research Questions.
