COMMON MISTAKES WHEN USING NVivo
One of the most common mistakes is coding sentence by sentence. Researchers often try to assign codes to almost every passage in a transcript, creating hundreds of disconnected codes that cannot be synthesized into meaningful themes. As a result, the data may be extensively “organized,” yet contribute very little academic value.
The second mistake is building an unsystematic node structure. Many researchers create nodes intuitively, rename them repeatedly, or develop overlapping nodes with similar meanings. As the dataset grows, the entire structure becomes increasingly confusing, making it difficult to synthesize and interpret the findings.
Another mistake is over-reliance on automated features, such as Word Frequency, Auto Coding, or AI Assistant. These tools can save time, but they cannot replace the researcher’s analytical thinking. In qualitative research, what matters is not simply which words appear most frequently, but the meaning behind what participants share.
Furthermore, many dissertations stop at presenting the nodes or themes generated in NVivo without addressing the essential questions: What do these findings contribute to theory? How do they explain the research phenomenon? In such cases, NVivo serves merely as a data storage tool rather than genuinely supporting knowledge creation.
Remember, NVivo does not analyze data for you. High-quality qualitative research always begins with an appropriate research design, a clear theoretical framework, and strong analytical thinking. The software simply helps you manage and organize this process more efficiently.
Dr. Mỹ Academy always emphasizes that learning NVivo is not about knowing which buttons to click, but about understanding how to transform data into scientifically rigorous and academically valuable arguments.
