5 MISCONCEPTIONS THAT LEAD MANY PHD RESEARCHERS TO GET QUALITATIVE RESEARCH WRONG FROM THE START
Many PhD researchers spend a great deal of time conducting interviews, coding data, and using NVivo, yet their research findings still lack academic depth. The problem does not lie in the software or the amount of data, but in misconceptions that arise as early as the research design stage.
Here are the 5 most common misconceptions:
1. The more people you interview, the better the research.
In qualitative research, what matters is not the number of participants, but Data Saturation – the point at which no new Codes or academically meaningful Themes emerge from the data.
2. NVivo will analyze the data for you.
NVivo is simply a tool that supports data management and organization. It cannot replace research thinking, Coding skills, or the researcher’s ability to develop academic arguments.
3. Code is the same as Theme.
A Code represents an initial meaning identified from the data. A Theme is the result of synthesizing multiple Codes to reflect a phenomenon or concept with academic significance. Confusing these two concepts can make the Findings fragmented and lacking in depth.
4. Findings only need to describe what participants said.
A strong Findings chapter does not stop at quoting participants’ statements. It must analyze the meaning behind the data, answer the Research Questions, and highlight the academic value of the study.
5. Qualitative research does not require a rigorous process.
In reality, qualitative research requires a highly rigorous process — from selecting the appropriate methodology, Coding, and developing Themes, to demonstrating Trustworthiness and explaining Data Saturation. These are also areas that examination committees often evaluate very carefully.
Qualitative research is not inherently difficult, but it can easily go in the wrong direction if its fundamental principles are misunderstood from the beginning. When you master the methodology and analytical mindset, you can not only develop academically meaningful Themes but also build a convincing thesis that makes a meaningful contribution to research knowledge.
