HOW DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR RESEARCH MODEL IS WEAK?
A research model with numerous variables, multiple hypotheses, and a complex diagram does not necessarily have a solid academic foundation.What matters is not how many relationships the model contains, but whether each relationship is theoretically grounded and contributes meaningful explanatory value.
When mentoring Master’s and PhD researchers, Dr. Mỹ evaluates research models through five layers of assessment:
1. Theoretical Foundation
Are the relationships between variables derived from established theories and supported by previous empirical evidence? If hypotheses are based solely on intuitive reasoning, the model may lack academic rigor and persuasiveness.
2. Conceptual Clarity
Are the concepts clearly defined and theoretically distinguishable? Overlapping constructs may create issues with discriminant validity, even when the measurement scales demonstrate high reliability.
3. Causal Logic and Hypotheses
Why does the independent variable affect the dependent variable? What mediating mechanism explains this relationship? What boundary conditions might change the effect? A model lacking explanatory logic often does little more than list correlations.
4. Alignment Between the Model and the Analytical Method
The research objectives, nature of the data, and model structure must be compatible with the chosen analytical method. Regression, CB-SEM, and PLS-SEM cannot compensate for a model that lacks a sound theoretical foundation.
5. Scientific Contribution
Does the model address a genuine research gap? Does its contribution lie in re-examining established relationships, explaining an unclear mechanism, or extending a theory to a new context?
