SPSS OR AMOS? WHICH ONE SHOULD PHD CANDIDATES USE?

This is perhaps one of the most frequently asked questions by PhD candidates when they begin quantitative research.

Many doctoral candidates spend weeks learning SPSS, only to switch to AMOS after hearing recommendations from others. In the end, they are still left wondering:

“Which software is actually the right choice for my research?”

The truth is, there is no software that is inherently “better” than another. What truly matters is your research methodology and research objectives.

SPSS is suitable for:

• Descriptive statistical analysis.
• Reliability analysis using Cronbach’s Alpha.
• Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA).
• Linear Regression Analysis.
• Mean comparison tests (T-test, ANOVA) and other basic statistical analyses.

AMOS is suitable for:

• Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA).
• Structural Equation Modeling (SEM).
• Examining relationships among latent variables.
• Analyzing direct, indirect, and total effects among variables within a research model.

One common misconception among PhD candidates is that AMOS replaces SPSS.

In most quantitative studies, SPSS and AMOS are used together. SPSS is typically used for data preparation and preliminary statistical analyses, while AMOS is employed to test the measurement and structural models at a more advanced level.

However, the success of a doctoral dissertation does not depend on how proficiently you use SPSS or AMOS.

What the examination committee cares about is:

• Why was this methodology chosen?
• Why was this analytical technique selected?
• Is the method truly appropriate for the research questions and theoretical foundation?
