What Is the Difference Between Findings and Discussion?

One of the most common mistakes in Master’s and Doctoral theses is writing the Discussion chapter as if it were simply a repetition of the Findings. As a result, the Discussion merely restates the results without demonstrating any real academic value.

In reality, Findings and Discussion serve two entirely different purposes.

Findings answer the question: “What did you find?”

This chapter presents the Themes, Sub-themes, Codes, tables, figures, models, statistical results, or illustrative quotesderived from the data. The content should remain objective, closely reflect the analytical results, and directly address the Research Questions.

Discussion, on the other hand, answers the question: “What do these findings mean?”

This is where researchers are expected to:

• Explain why the findings emerged.
• Relate the findings to the underlying Theory and Conceptual Framework.
• Compare the results with previous studies in the Literature.
• Identify similarities, differences, or novel findings.
• Demonstrate the study’s Theoretical Contribution and Practical Contribution.

In other words:

Findings = What did you find?
Discussion = Why does it matter?

A strong Findings chapter enables readers to see the data.

A strong Discussion chapter enables the examination committee to see the value of the research.

Many doctoral researchers devote considerable time to data collection, Coding, and Theme development, yet when writing the Discussion, they simply paraphrase the Findings instead of providing deeper academic interpretation. Consequently, the thesis lacks analytical depth and fails to clearly demonstrate its scholarly contribution.
