“Have you drawn your Conceptual Framework yet?”
Many students are surprised. They assume that having a questionnaire and a dataset is enough to start running SPSS.
In reality, it is the other way around.
A Conceptual Framework is the “map” of the entire research study. It shows:
Which variables are independent variables?
Which variable is the dependent variable?
Are there any mediating or moderating variables?
In what sequence will the Hypotheses be tested?
Which analytical technique in SPSS is being used to answer each Research Question?
If these questions have not been answered, opening SPSS is merely a technical exercise.
You may be highly proficient in running Descriptive Statistics, Reliability Tests, EFA, Correlation, or Regression, yet still not understand why you are running each analysis or what the results actually demonstrate.
Dr. Mỹ always emphasizes:
SPSS does not create the research. SPSS only tests a research model that has been properly designed.
That is why, in our mentoring sessions, students are encouraged to spend time developing their Conceptual Framework first, before moving on to data analysis.
Once the research model is clear:
Questionnaire design becomes more logical.
Data collection becomes more focused.
SPSS analysis has a clear direction.
And most importantly, the Results and Discussion will align with the Research Questions and Hypotheses.
A strong Thesis or Dissertation is not built by having more statistical tables.
It is built upon logical research thinking from the very beginning.
