What Is EFA? What Is CFA? Why Is CFA More Important Than EFA?

In reality, strong EFA results do not necessarily mean that your measurement scales have been fully validated.

Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) is used to explore the underlying structure of observed variables. It helps identify groups of variables that appear to measure the same construct and is particularly useful during the initial stages of developing or refining a measurement scale.

Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), on the other hand, is used to test whether the proposed measurement model fits the observed data. Rather than exploring potential structures, CFA confirms the scientific validity of the measurement model.

This is why, in international academic research—particularly at the doctoral level—CFA is considered more critical than EFA.

Through CFA, researchers can evaluate:

• Model Fit of the measurement model.
• Composite Reliability (CR).
• Convergent Validity.
• Discriminant Validity.
• The extent to which the observed variables accurately represent the intended latent constructs.

If you stop at EFA, you only know that certain variables tend to cluster together. Only CFA provides sufficient evidence to demonstrate that your measurement scales accurately measure the theoretical constructs they are intended to represent.
