The 4 Types of Research Gaps Every Doctoral Researcher Should Know
A Research Gap is the foundation of a study that makes a meaningful academic contribution. Without clearly identifying a genuine research gap, your study is likely to replicate previous research rather than generate new knowledge.
However, many doctoral researchers assume that a Research Gap simply means “no one has studied this topic before.”In reality, research gaps can emerge from several different perspectives.
There are four major types of Research Gaps commonly recognized in international research:
1. Conceptual Gap
Previous studies have not fully explained the nature of a phenomenon, or important concepts, relationships, or perspectives remain underdeveloped and require further investigation.
2. Theoretical Gap
Existing theories do not adequately explain the research problem, or there is a need to test, extend, or integrate theories to develop a new theoretical perspective.
3. Contextual Gap
A research model has been validated in different countries, industries, or populations, but has not yet been examined within the specific context of your study.
4. Methodological Gap
Previous studies have relied on research methods with certain limitations or methods that may not be the most appropriate. Applying a different research methodology may generate new and more meaningful findings.
The key point is that a Research Gap should never be invented—it must be systematically identified and justified through a comprehensive analysis and synthesis of the Literature Review.
A well-defined Research Gap should logically lead to the development of the Research Questions, Theory, Methodology, and ultimately highlight the academic contribution of the study.
This is also why many research proposals require multiple revisions—not because the writing is weak, but because the Research Gap is not clearly identified or convincingly justified.
