HOW TO CITE INTERVIEW QUOTES ACCORDING TO INTERNATIONAL ACADEMIC STANDARDS
One of the most common mistakes doctoral researchers make when writing the Findings chapter is inserting verbatim interview responses into the thesis without following appropriate academic conventions. This can make the research less scholarly, difficult to follow, and weaken the overall argument.
In qualitative research, interview quotes are not included simply to fill pages. They serve as evidence supporting a Theme, Code, Sub-theme, or research finding developed through the researcher’s analysis.
A common approach used in high-quality international journals is:
- Present the Theme or Sub-theme first.
- Explain and interpret the meaning of the Theme.
- Include one or two representative quotes.
- Explain why the selected quote supports or illustrates the research finding.
The participant should also be clearly identified using an appropriate coding system, for example:
“Our customers value transparency more than price.”
(Participant 05, Marketing Manager)
Or:
(P07, Female, 32 years old)
Using participant codes such as P01, P02, P03… helps protect participants’ confidentiality while allowing the researcher and examination committee to trace the connection between the interview data and the reported findings.
Avoid Using Quotes That Are Too Long
Another common mistake is including excessively long interview quotations.
If an interview passage occupies half a page but contains only one key idea, select the section that most clearly communicates the message you are trying to demonstrate.
The quality of the analysis matters more than the number of quotes.
Most importantly, remember:
A quote does not speak for itself.
The researcher’s interpretation, connection to the existing literature, theoretical implications, and ability to answer the Research Questions are what demonstrate genuine research competence.
At Dr. Mỹ Academy, doctoral researchers receive guidance not only on qualitative data collection but also on Coding, Theme development, quote selection, and Findings presentation according to international academic standards, helping their theses achieve greater academic rigor and persuasiveness.
