What Is SEM? – A Marketing Research Model Explained

Many doctoral researchers have heard of SEM (Structural Equation Modeling) but still assume that it is simply an advanced statistical technique.

In reality, SEM is much more than “running software.” It is a research method that allows researchers to examine the measurement model and structural model within an integrated framework.

Simply put, SEM helps answer two important questions:

  • First: Do your measurement scales accurately measure the constructs they are intended to measure?
    Measurement Model
  • Second: Are the proposed hypotheses and relationships between constructs supported by empirical data?
    Structural Model

An Example from Marketing Research

Suppose you are studying:

Social Media Marketing → Brand Image → Brand Trust → Purchase Intention

SEM can help you examine:

  • Does Social Media Marketing improve Brand Image?
  • Does Brand Image increase Brand Trust?
  • Does Brand Trust influence Purchase Intention?
  • How strong are these relationships across the overall research model?

This is one of the major advantages of SEM compared with many traditional analytical techniques: rather than examining individual relationships in isolation, SEM allows researchers to evaluate the research model as an integrated system.

Today, SEM is widely used in fields such as Marketing, Management, Consumer Behavior, Education, Psychology, and the Social Sciences, particularly in studies targeting international academic publication.

However, one common mistake among doctoral researchers is learning how to use AMOS or SmartPLS before understanding the underlying logic of SEM.

Software is only a tool.

What matters more is the ability to:

  • Develop a research model grounded in strong theoretical foundations.
  • Select appropriate and validated measurement scales.
  • Establish a logical relationship between constructs.
  • Interpret statistical results from an academic perspective.
  • Connect the findings back to the Research Questions and theoretical framework.

A strong SEM model is not defined by the number of paths it contains or how “beautiful” its statistical indicators look. Its value lies in its ability to explain a meaningful research problem and generate theoretical and practical insights.

This is also why, in the mentoring programs at Dr. Mỹ Academy, researchers are guided to begin with research model development and theoretical reasoning, and only then move to SEM testing.

When you understand the underlying logic, you stop simply “running numbers” and start doing real scientific research.
